Clyde & Co has launched two new offices in the US in Washington DC and Chicago following the hire of 10 partners from international firm Troutman Sanders.
Four partners will join in Chicago while the other six will open Clydes’ new DC base. All practice across insurance and litigation and join with around 30 associates and staff.
The mass hire brings Clydes’ US office count to eight, comprising around 50 partners and 200 legal staff.
The firm’s significant expansion follows senior partner James Burns stepping down last year to take on a new role as head of the Americas, which saw him relocate from London to the US. He was replaced in the global role by insurance head and ex-BLG boss Simon Konsta.
Clyde & Co has been pushing an expansionist US strategy since Burns was elected in 2013 on a platform of major growth.
Most recently the firm bolted on Miami litigation boutique Thornton Davis Fein in May, exactly a decade after it first launched in the US, opening offices in New York and Los Angeles.
On the latest acquisition Konsta told The Lawyer “this is certainly not it” for Clydes’ growth in the US, and that the firm would continue to invest in new offices and new practice areas.
“We look at our core sectors and the US corporate and legal markets and still think there is plenty of room for growth,” he said.
“The next logical step has to be to grow out our litigation capability on the ground to complement our insurance capabilities and expand into infrastructure, trade and commodities, energy and transport.”
When asked about Clydes’ growth strategy, which typically focuses on group hires from rival firms, Konsta said: “We like to have critical mass. Chicago and Washington DC are both mature legal centres and we need to have ready-made credibility to get our foot in the door and grow.”
The partners joining in Chicago are Eileen King Bower, Clint Cameron (who will both become joint office heads), David Cutter and James Sanders. Joining in DC are Jack Gerstein, David Gische, Leslie Ahari, Meredith Werner, Patrick Hofer and Gaby Richeimer.
In a statement Americas head Burns said: “Clients increasingly want support not just locally, but across the US and the world. Clyde & Co has an unmatched reputation in the insurance sector globally and provides us with a great platform to broaden out our insurance coverage and trial practices. We’re excited to be playing a part in this latest phase of the firm’s growth.”
