Immigration law firm Fragomen, Del Rey, Bernsen & Loewy has revealed a data breach in a notice filed with the state of California on Friday.
Fragomen said an unauthorized third party accessed a single data file with personal information about “a discrete number” of current and former employees of Google, which is one of its clients.
The accessed file contained information related to the I-9 process used to verify employment eligibility. Fragomen provides I-9 services to Google.
The incident occurred Sept. 24.
“We promptly commenced an investigation upon learning of this activity and engaged a digital forensic investigation firm to assist with this investigation,” Fragomen wrote in a letter to those affected.
Fragomen said it had no evidence at this point that information in the accessed file had been viewed. The law firm has since taken steps to enhance security infrastructure and detection capabilities.
Fragomen has notified the affected people and offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring where it is available.
