Signature Litigation has opened an office in Gibraltar, giving the firm its first base outside of London.
The litigation boutique is understood to be the only UK firm to have established a presence in the offshore British territory, hiring former ISOLAS partner Elliot Phillips to lead the office.
He is an international commercial litigation and disputes lawyer, and joins having spent 14 years at his former firm.
Major matters include acting for the Secretary of State for Defence and Ministry of Defence in Gibraltar.
He has advised on issues involving both the UK and Gibraltar government, and was also elected in 2015 as an MP in the Gibraltar Parliament. He is currently serving as the Shadow Minister for Justice, Equality and Civil Rights.
Phillips said: “My experience in large commercial and high value trust disputes involving Gibraltar structures will be beneficial to many international Signature clients.”
Founding partner Graham Huntley added: “[The office] complements our work relating to other international territories, including CIS, Russia, MENA, China and Latin America.”
A spokesperson for Signature said: “Gibraltar does a lot of work already on English law jurisdiction, so opening an office there, where Elliott is already based, made complete sense.
“The office is not part of a multi-jurisdiction roll-out. It is not at the moment part of a major scheme of expansion, although that hasn’t been ruled out.”
The appointment of Phillips follows the recent hire of DLA Piper commercial litigator and international arbitrator Josh Wong, who joined the firm in February.
The firm has been representing a number of Royal Bank of Scotland investors in the ongoing £4bn rights issue battle, some of whom settled their claims while the remaining 60 per cent, including 27,000 retail investors, are pushing forward for trial in May.
The case features in The Lawyer’s Top 20 cases of 2017. Huntley acted for the claimants who argue they were misled ahead of a £12bn rescue fundraising at the peak of the financial crisis.
Signature came to represent the claimants after they swapped their lawyers twice in the three years leading up to trial.
